Diego Costa handed three-match ban for violent conduct

But Mourinho was clearly unhappy at Diego Costa’s suspension as he bit his lip to avoid a ban of his own.

The Blues striker became embroiled in an incident with Laurent Koscielny in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Arsenal and has since been retrospectively punished.

And the Premier League champions have vowed to wait for the Football Association’s written reasons before issuing any further comment on the matter.

Former Manchester United defender Gary Neville has criticised the FA’s decision to give Chelsea striker Diego Costa a three-game ban for what they’ve deemed violent conduct in the match against Arsenal at the weekend.

Arsenal have since appealed against the dismissal while Costa has subsequently been charged with violent conduct for his part in the spat.

On Tuesday the FA announced Chelsea’s appeal against the three-match ban Costa received following his clash with Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny had been rejected by an Independent Regulatory Commission. “For them it’s a big occasion and as I was saying, it’s important to respect them and to go with a good team with the desire to win“. “No problem, you can do it”, he said.

Costa’s ban is a large blow for Chelsea, who’ve endured a poor begin to their defence of their EPL title with three defeats of their first six matches. But this kind of situation goes much, much, much, much more deeply and the team is hurting, obviously.

Wenger said: “That (retrospective action) is the least they could do, but he (Costa) will do the same again next week and the week after and he always gets away with it”.

“That’s why you have full stadiums and the game watched around the world by millions and millions”.

There is, however, still a risk that Gabriel could miss the Premier League match against Leicester City on Saturday following a separate improper conduct charge for the way that he protested his sending off.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has expressed his anger over Diego Costa's three-match ban
