Diego Costa scores late for Chelsea to deny Manchester United

Yet somehow they still managed to escape with a stoppage time goal from Diego Costa, who cancelled out Jesse Lingard’s fine opener to maintain Guus Hiddink’s unbeaten record. Nemanja Matic forced a save from David De Gea on a directed header across net, and Diego Costa had a tight-angled shot skitter wide after having beaten a pair of defenders.

We’ll have to wait to hear how serious Kurt Zouma’s injury actually is, but my gut tells me that this contest was the last we’ll see of the Frenchman this season, following an absolutely gruesome looking knee injury.

After a nil-all draw against Watford, Chelsea remain over 15 points adrift of fourth placed Arsenal, who now hold the last Champions League qualifying spot.

“I haven’t calculated mathematically if it’s possible, but we must start winning games”.

Hiddink added Pedro Rodriguez to the mix and after De Gea had saved brilliantly from Ivanovic and Cesc Fabregas, Costa equalised.

Chelsea rallied, John Terry seeing a penalty appeal waved away after his shot hit Daley Blind on the arm, but after Zouma had been carried off following an awkward fall, United made the breakthrough.

It has been a hard season for Chelsea fans, players, and management alike.

Mata was demoted to the bench for three Premier League matches in January as Louis van Gaal preferred Ander Herrera to his fellow Spaniard.

Jose Mourinho sacked as manager of Chelsea in December. Manchester United must obtain good results from these matches or it could spark the end of LvG’s era at the club. “So I also hope to get the support of the media this week”.

He said to Sky Sports: “To concede so late it feels like a defeat”. “I owe you a lot and we will all miss you”. He did it also in the first half.

“Leicester running away and us playing them next week, (makes) the game interesting”, Wenger said.

But as the game headed into six minutes of added time, Memphis Depay found himself on the right flank with four teammates accompanying him in the attack.

“At this moment I don’t know where football will take me, because in football you never know”.

Chelsea were on the back-foot from the word go and United won a succession of early corners, but none of them caused the Blues any real problems.

Van Gaal became visibly frustrated with the match officials as the game was winding down, but Hiddink dismissed his compatriot’s post-match complaints about the amount of additional time that was played.
