Diner owner defends yelling at 2-year-old to stop crying
Darla Neugebauer, who owns Marcy’s Diner on Oak Street in downtown Portland, was unapologetic for her actions both on Facebook and in an interview with WCSH-TV.

Neugebauer told WCSH-TV (http://on.wcsh6.com/1Llybfa ) that the parents ignored the child, even after she was served. “I slammed my hands on the counter and I said, ‘This needs to stop!’ meaning her screaming”, Neugebauer tells the local news outlet.
The mother of the child wrote on Facebook that anyone with young children should understand that crying is normal after waiting more than 40 minutes for food. “I would have preferred that she said to me, ‘Can you take your child out of the restaurant?’ We don’t go around yelling at other people’s kids”, said Jen Wolkon. It made the 75 other people dining here happy, and they left.
When asked whether she felt sorry about her actions, Neugebauer said: “Sorry isn’t the right word”.
She’s also apparently not about to take a screaming toddler in her restaurant. “Sometimes it’s better in a small place to have them step outside for the conversation so you don’t make a scene”, Josh Wolkon said. She criticized Neugebauer for screaming at the child, writing: “Who in their right mind would behave like this unless you are deranged?” “They may never come back, other people may not come in”, she said. “My daughter was crying, it was nothing out of the norm”, she told KSDK. Shocked! They said ‘did you just yell at a child?’ Yup!

“It’s hard to imagine that somebody would scream at another person’s child, and as a parent I wouldn’t ever want to see that, but parents have to do something to help their child in a situation like this so his or her upset isn’t continuing”, says the owner of Please Pass the Manners. “Like, you will never be like this when you get older, ‘” she said. She ends her post with “I have a business to run and yes I am **** insane and you are lucky I didn’t get really **** nuts because being physical is not something I cower from, male or female”. I might have used poor judgement. I wouldn’t say I was sorry because it stopped. “When things stop, it’s usually a good thing”.
