The star won the Bafta for best supporting actress at Sunday night’s ceremony for her role in Steve Jobs and dedicated it to women who are the subject of criticism. This marks his fourth BAFTA win (in addition to “Birdman”, he also nabbed statuettes for “Gravity” and “Children of Men”).
Fellow British star Mark Rylance was named best supporting actor for his role as a Russian spy in Bridge Of Spies.
In the documentary category, home-grown British film “Amy” won out over global competition for its in-depth portrayal of singer Amy Winehouse before she was famous and began to struggle with addiction.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens was awarded for special visual effects.
British costume designer Jenny Beavan won the costume award for Mad Max: Fury Road – but host Stephen Fry attracted animosity on Twitter when he suggested her outfit made her look like a “bag lady”.
Fassbender, whose mother is from Larne, lost out to Leonardo DiCaprio in the best actor category, while Naji Abu Nowar and Rupert Lloyd took the outstanding debut award. Emmanuel Lubezki’s win for cinematography for his work on “The Revenant” was his fourth Bafta.
DiCaprio, who is also expected to soar during the upcoming Oscars, thanked his mother during his acceptance speech.
Meanwhile, Disney Pixar’s “Inside Out” won Best Animated Film. Composer Ennio Morricone won for his score of “The Hateful Eight”, and actor Sidney Poitier received the Fellowship Award for his contribution to cinema.
Sub-prime mortgages may not sound like the sexiest subject for a film, but The Big Short pulled it off! “The Revenant” has earned DiCaprio his sixth Oscar nomination – and, many consider, his greatest shot at lastly profitable.
The head of the British film academy said she supported the protesters’ aims.
Alan Rickman, Omar Sharif, David Bowie, Wes Craven, Sir Christopher Lee and composer James Horner were remembered in a moving in memoriam reel during the ceremony. “Wild Tales” won the Best Film Not in the English Language.
The Winslet/DiCaprio friendship has been one of the most enjoyable narratives to emerge from this awards season. Winslet is one of the best actresses out there (minus Movie 43), and she doesn’t “settle” for anything, especially “fat girl parts”, whatever that means.
