Director Juan Antonia Bayona leaves ‘World War Z’ sequel

Director Juan Antonio Bayona has stepped away from the film, citing scheduling conflicts as the reason. Paramount are keen to get the project in front of cameras this year but Bayona still has post production and press commitments to his latest effort, A Monster Calls.

Bayona’s departure may also open his availability for Universal, which was possibly interested in him directing the Jurassic World sequel. The current plan is to have the film out on June 9, 2017. The script was written by Steven Knight, with a rewrite from Dennis Kelly.

The World War Z sequel is following in the footsteps of its predecessor – and we’re not talking the hordes of flesh-eaters bound to return.

Bayona directed The Impossible, which earned Naomi Watts an Oscar nomination.

The zombie apocalypse movie – which will see Brad Pitt reprise his role as United Nations investigator Gerry Lane who discovered the source of the virus that turned half of humanity into the walking dead – has experienced extensive production problems and now the filmmaker has quit production. His new film, A Monster Calls, stars Liam Neeson, Felicity Jones and Sigourney Weaver. While everything seems to have been going well, Deadline reports that World War Z 2 has lost its director, Juan Antonio Bayona, just a few months before filming is supposed to begin.
