Directors Guild of America Award Nominees Announced

Mexico’s Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu and Britain’s Ridley Scott on Tuesday topped the list of nominees for the Directors Guild of America (DGA) award – a strong indicator of Oscar hopes. One of them could still slip into the Oscar field, with first time Oscar contender McKay probably more vulnerable to being shoved out. This is the first D.G.A. nomination for McCarthy, McKay, and Miller, all of whom would be first-time best-director Oscar nominees as well.

In addition to Quentin Tarantino and Todd Haynes missing out, so too did Steven Spielberg for “Bridge Of Spies”.

Scott’s nomination is his fourth, although he has never won. The Academy Award nominations will be announced on Thursday.

A DGA nod is also good news for the best-picture chances of the five nominees. The Mexican filmmaker, 52, fresh off his best director win at the Golden Globes, is up for the prestigious outstanding directorial achievement in feature film prize he took home previous year for “Birdman”, reported Contactmusic. The nominees are Fernando Coimbra (A Wolf at the Door), Joel Edgerton (The Gift), Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Marielle Heller (The Diary of a Teenage Girl) and Laszlo Nemes (Son of Saul).

Per a DGA press release, winners will be announced at the 68th Annual Director’s Guild of America Awards on on February 6 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza.

In any case, the Writers, Producers, Directors and Screen Actors guilds have all given their nominations, with Spotlight and The Big Short the only films to be nominated by all four guilds.
