DirecTV wants to be the next online substitute for cable

Depending on your market, certain local affiliate stations might not be on board yet, though AT&T says it is working to get them all eventually.

DirecTV Now pricing bundles will range from over 60 channels for $35 per month to over 120 channels for $70 a month, AT&T said.

We’ve heard plenty of rumors beforehand, but AT&T made it official yesterday.

In addition to DirecTV Now, AT&T is launching Fullscreen with more than 1,500 hours of ad-free scripted and unscripted original series, TV shows and films licensed from studios.

Notably missing from that list are CBS and Showtime, though AT&T executives stressed during today’s launch event that they hope to one day reach an agreement with those broadcasters. For starters, if you’re an AT&T Wireless customer, you’ll be able to watch DirecTV Now programming without affecting your monthly data allotment. In its defense, AT&T says that its sponsored zero-rating program is available to all third-parties and is actually beneficial to customers.

Next year DirecTV Now will work with Roku devices, Amazon Fire tablets, and Smart TVs from Samsung. They won’t be charged for any data usage when streaming on the DIRECTV NOW app. According to TechCrunch, More channels and add-ons like Taylor Swift Channels are offered in $50 and $100 worth of DirecTV Now package.

The service, which will be available on Wednesday, will initially offer more than 100 channels for a teaser price of $35 a month.

Interested customers can try out any of the four DirecTV programming packages for free for seven days when signing up at the DirecTV website and downloading the dedicated app from Google Play or the Apple App Store. If you pre-buy three months of service, you get a free Apple TV.

AT&T will also allow subscribers to add additional services, such as HBO or Cinemax, on top of any package for an extra $5 per month. AT&T will also offer a smaller package of about 60 channels for $35.

I cut cable TV earlier this year and switched over to online streaming services.

You can’t have more than two streams going at once. Courting those people now with packages catering to viewers who prefer to watch shows on their own terms-meaning when and where they want on the devices they choose-is a smart move because drawing them in later when even more streaming options are available will be more hard.
