The previously unplanned visit is a sign of improving relations between the two nuclear-armed neighbours. The two countries recently chose to launch a comprehensive dialogue after Modi and Sharif met in Paris.
Tewari also alleged that national security has been undermined by Modi’s visit.
“It was a goodwill visit by the Indian Prime Minister, and our Prime Minister welcomed it”, he remarked. It was not only Christmas Day, Sharif’s birthday as well.
Security forces and troops were beefed up at the Lahore International Airport shortly before Modi’s arrival.
On his way back to Indian capital, Modi landed in Lahore where Nawaz Sharif among federal ministers received him. “If this happens, we welcome this visit”, Sena spokesman Sanjay Raut said in Mumbai.
Questioning Modi’s “unscheduled” visit, Congress’ senior spokesperson Anand Sharma said his engagement with Pakistan is “frivolous, unpredictable, marked by fits and starts and abrupt U-turns”. “This gives us all hopes that there will be one happy outcome”. The Pakistani media said the two leaders had made a decision to take forward their bilateral relations for the benefit of South Asia. However he refused to share any details about the place of meeting in his meeting.
Springing a huge foreign policy surprise, Prime Minister Narendra Modi joined his Pakistani counterpart at his ancestral home in Jatti Umra near Lahore.
Amitabh Matto, an Indian foreign policy expert, described Modi’s birthday diplomacy visit as a “very positive step”. “This is the best Christmas gift to the mankind which believes in peace and amity”.
In Pakistan, the population has largely backed efforts to bring peace between the two countries. This was followed by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj’s visit to Islamabad.
India accuses Pakistan of arming and training insurgents fighting for Kashmir’s independence from India or its merger with Pakistan, a charge Islamabad denies. “People of Kashmir are sacrificing in freedom movement and Nawaz Sharif welcomed the oppressor of Kashmir in Pakistan”, he regretted. India insisted talks and terror can not go together. Saeed lives in the open in Pakistan and often appears in TV interviews.
The fact that Modi arrived from Kabul is extremely significant considering the fact that New Delhi and Islamabad are engaged in a shadow war over exercising influence in Afghanistan.
Ahead of his address, he and Afghan President Ashraf Ghani jointly inaugurated Afghanistan’s new parliament building which was constructed with Indian assistance of $90 million.
Analysts said the visit was an important development.

“Yes, absolutely. I am here”, Modi replied, according to the official. “Some even tried to discourage us”.
