Police said they were called to the Regency Hotel in north Dublin at around 2:30 pm where they found three injured men, all in their 20s or 30s.
Sky Sports in London said Irish police have cordoned off the area and deployed numerous Officers to investigate the shooting at the hotel, to which firefighters and paramedics swiftly responded, following what was described as this appalling atrocity..
A sixth man remained in the drivers seat of the silver Ford transit van, according to to the detectives.
Kavanagh will fight for the WBO European lightweight title against Portuguese Antonio Joao Bento.
The country’s justice minister has described the manner of the attack, which happened at a hotel in broad daylight with children present, just 4 kilometres from central Dublin, as “unprecedented”.
Assistant Commissioner Jack Nolan told a news conference: “We believe that the violent perpetrators of this are out there in the community and can be located”.
The boxing chief said the attackers did not target the boxers but other people shot in the hotel reception.
Kavanagh sent a tweet after the shooting, saying that he was “lucky” to escape harm.
RTÉ is reporting that police are concerned that there could be retaliation for the attack.
The Irish Independent reports the shooting is believed to be linked to the murder of criminal Gary Hutch, a nephew of Gerry “The Monk” Hutch, in southern Spain four months ago.
It said Mr Byrne was well-known to police and had been questioned several times over serious and organised crime.
“[The gunman] said something to me but I don’t know what he even said, I can’t remember at this point, I just know I’ve never felt terror like it, I was really, really scared and then after that it was just silence”.
The other two were taken to hospital with suspected gunshot wounds, but their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.
Foyle added that he saw one of the shootings from about six feet away – the victim of which was the man who died.
“I jumped over the receptionist’s desk and got on the ground and I started shouting, ‘Don’t shoot, don’t shoot, ‘ and I think I actually said ‘I’m innocent'”.
Another picture showed figures armed with handguns, one apparently wearing a wig, running from the scene which took place at a weigh-in for a “Clash of the Clans” boxing match.

But it has said the event had now been cancelled.
