Disney announces Jungle Book, Maleficent sequels

Disney had also staked out other dates late previous year, and assuming the rest of those stay where they are, that means the studio has seven live action fairy tale-related movies coming out between 2017 and 2019.

The studio has staked out release dates, but did not say which product would be reserved for which slot.

There’s been other excellent Jungle Book news floating around of late: The Hollywood Reporter claimed recently that both Marks and Favreau were in negotiations to return to their roles as screenwriter and director, respectively, for the sequel.

Elsewhere, there’s a vehicle for Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, called “Jungle Cruise”, and the Mary Poppins sequel, to be directed by musicals don Rob Marshall and starring Emily Blunt as the magical nanny.

Disney is ready to dominate with the brand quality they’ve been establishing in a major way in recent years, perhaps better than they’ve ever had it in the company’s history, which is really saying something.

The announcement comes in the wake of the success of live-action fairy-tale adaptations such as Maleficent and The Jungle Book at the box office.

Now in the works are a Mary Poppins sequel, starring Emily Blunt, and 101 Dalmatians spin-off, Cruella.

We suspect we’ll be hearing more about these in the near future as Disney’s live-action slate becomes just as important as its Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar and Disney Animation offerings. Disney, based in Burbank, California, has stepped up efforts to draw from its classic fairy-tale canon for live-action spinoffs since the 2014 hit “Maleficent”. The planned dates see one in 2017 (July 28, originally December 22), three in 2018 (April 6, August 3, and Christmas Day), and one in 2019 (December 20).

Also making the list are A Wrinkle In Time by Madeleine L’Engle, based on the 1962 sci-fi novel, and The Nutcracker And The Four Realms, based on the 1816 fairy tale. On April 25, Disney confirmed that the actress will set foot again in Sleeping Beauty’s whimsical live-action kingdom.
