Disney’s Zootopia outpaces Frozen opening weekend with $73.7m box office takings

There’s a new top dog – or at least a top rabbit – at the box office.

Zootopia was directed by rich Moore (Wreck-It Ralph) and Byron Howard (Tangled). Though only with a 26% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the movie performed to distributor Millennium Films’ opening weekend projections. The film took in $5 million over the weekend and has earned $22.8 million since opening two weeks ago.

From almost 3,500 locations, the “Olympus Has Fallen” follow-up pulled in $21.7 million and finished in second place.

Debuting in fourth was Tina Fey’s latest, Whiskey Tango Foxtrot which opened to an estimated $7.6M from 2,374 theaters for a per screen average of only $3,201.

Disney also owns Pixar Animation Studios, which has produced animated hits like “Monsters University”, “Inside Out” and “Toy Story 3”, which had a $110.3 million opening in 2010.

The movie, which finds Fey’s journalist character on assignment in Afghanistan, has garnered mixed to positive reviews from critics.

The audience for “Zootopia” skewed towards female moviegoers which is up to 53 percent and towards moviegoers 25 years and younger which is up to 54 percent.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theaters, according to comScore. It also has a shot at becoming the 12th animated movie to premiere to more than US$70 million, a list led by the 2007 launch of Shrek The Third at US$121 million.

The movie, which takes place in a city in which various animals live side-by-side, grossed more than $73 million. Gods of Egypt rounded out the top five with just $5 million.
