Disney ‘to make Mary Poppins sequel’
At the start of the week, news broke that Disney is working on a follow-up to Mary Poppins, digging into the many further Poppins books that author P L Travers wrote around the character.

While there’s no concrete word on casting, Entertainment Weekly reported that Disney has tapped Into The Woods director Rob Marshall and producers John DeLuca and Marc Platt to shepard the project. “In particular, news of a live-action Cinderella was greeted with similar angst, and that film, released earlier this year, ended up taking in $542 million worldwide”, NY Times says.
Disney is cranking out even more interesting ideas from its vault and has chose to pick up on a new storyline with the very loveable singing British nanny Mary Poppins.
In addition to having musical experience from Woods, Blunt has recently been in a string of recent strong choices, including fighting alongside Tom Cruise in Edge of Tomorrow, one of the lead roles in next year’s The Girl on the Train adaptation, and this weekend’s drug trafficking drama from Denis Villeneuve, Sicario.
The new film will be set in a later period, Depression-era London, and will also draw from Travers’ book series to explore Mary’s continuing adventures with the Banks family.
The first version of the film won five Oscars including awards for best actress and best song for “Chim Chim Cher-ee”.
Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, who worked on Hairspray and Smash, will compose new original songs.
Disney previously told the story of Travers’ meetings with Walt Disney as he persuaded her to let him make Mary Poppins with 2013’s Saving Mr. Banks.
