DisplayPort 1.4 Specifications Unveiled: Supports 8K Resolution and HDR

VESA further notes that the 1.4 standard features forward error correction and HDR meta transport in addition to the aforementioned expanded audio support.

HDR meta transport – HDR meta transport uses the “secondary data packet” transport inherent in the DisplayPort standard to provide support for the current CTA 861.3 standard, which is useful for DP to HDMI 2.0a protocol conversion, among other examples.

The newly minted standard will also allow for 8K HDR deep colour (7680 x 4320) at 60 Hz or 4K HDR deep colour video at 120 Hz.

The specifications for DisplayPort version 1.4 have now been finalized, marking the first update to the standard since 2014. AMD will support DisplayPort 1.3 in 2016 with its new Polaris architecture, which implies an 18-month to two-year gap between standard finalization and ship dates.

Your future smartphone, for instance, could easily stream 8K HDR video to an 8K resolution TV or display, all thanks to this new DisplayPort standard. Although DP started out with its own connector, it has over time also adopted other ports, like Thunderbolt and, now, USB Type-C. VESA’s solution was to focus on its Display Stream Compression (DSC) technology rather than increase bandwidth. DSC enables up to a 3:1 compression ratio and is virtually lossless, so users shouldn’t expect a loss in video quality. All known audio formats are said to be included within its capabilities and it can support up to 32 audio channels and a 1536kHz sample rate. The most highlighted feature making it to the newest version is the support for VESA’s Display Stream Compression (DSC) technology. The new standard aims to drive high res displays.

“New applications are demanding displays with better resolution, wider colour gamut, and increased dynamic range”.
