Tyler McQuillen was spearfishing in three-metre deep water off the coast of Santa Barbara in the USA when he was hit from behind.

The petrified swimmer dropped his spear gun – thought his death was imminent – but managed to retrieve his spear gun just moments before the shark charged at him and hitting it with his spear gun just as it passed him, thus forcing the shark to retreat. Tyler McQuillen was swimming in about ten feet of water at the time and captured the entire dramatic incident on his GoPro, attached to the spear gun.
Tyler McQuillen, 22, was fishing with friends in shallow water at Refugio Point on September 1 when he was hit in the back by the monster shark, which is believed to have been close to four-metres.
“A HUGE great white which was at least 12ft long attacked me from the left side”.
“It quickly circled around me and I used my speargun to keep it away”, Hugg stated. He was unaware he had been bitten until he reached shore.
He said initially he thought his friend pulled the flipper off before realizing the shark had bitten his foot, according to the Mirror.
Tyler had just seconds to react as the shark – perhaps smelling blood – wheeled around for a second attack.
Inside Edition reported that McQuillen would be on crutches for a month, but he plans on going back into the water, even though he knows he dodged a bullet.

He added: “Extremely lucky to get out of this one alive”.
