Divergent: Ascendant Is Looking for a New Director

Robert Schwentke, who directed last year’s The Divergent Series: Insurgent and this year’s upcoming The Divergent Series: Allegiant, has opted not to return for next year’s franchise finale, The Divergent Series: Ascendant. “He has a good relationship with Lionsgate, where he helmed Red”.

Neil Burger directed the first film, “Divergent”, and decided not to do the second before the first film opened. It was then announced that Schwentke was to direct the final two movies as well, Allegiant and Ascendant. Like its YA predecessor, Divergent’s original director stepped aside after one film, leaving another to helm the last three films of the franchise. We saw David Yates finish Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows after two films before it, and we saw Francis Lawrence take The Hunger Games to the end zone through Catching Fire and the two subsequent films that followed.

Deadline has learned that the two-time Divergent series director has dropped out of the fourth and final instalment, titled Ascendant. Lionsgate must now find another director for the movie, which is still scheduled to start filming in Atlanta this summer before released Stateside on June 9, 2017.
