‘Divergent’ Final Film ‘Ascendant’ To Skip Big Screen; Head To Television Instead

That wouldn’t exactly be the end of THE DIVERGENT SERIES however, as Lionsgate is hoping to then move from the TV movie directly into a standalone television series set in the same post-apocalyptic world.

Shooting on Ascendant was planned for this summer in Atlanta, however, the box office performance of Allegiant has caused the studio to re-think the decision. It is now unclear whether the stars of the film series, including Shailene Woodley, Theo James, Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller, and Zoe Kravitz, will return for the Ascendant TV movie. Right now, the plan is to conclude the storylines from the prior movies in an Ascendant telefilm-while also introducing new characters, who would then carry on with a new, stand-alone story set in the same dystopian universe.

The Divergent films focused on a futuristic society where people are broken up into social and personality-related factions.

Variety’s source says that the studio is now looking to release the final film as a TV movie that could potentially launch a spin-off series. Instead, the movie will head straight to television with a spinoff series in the works from the studio. Veronica Roth authored the best-selling series that inspired the movies.

Ascendant had been scheduled to hit theaters June 9, 2017, with Lee Toland Krieger (Age of Adaline) directing. The series, which was stretched to four films following the success of the first movie, stars Shailene Woodley, Miles Teller and Ansel Elgort.

According to Variety, Lionsgate is still in the process of securing the deal to make the change and has not pitched to any networks, yet.
