Diversity dominates 2016 SAG Awards amid Oscars race row controversy

Idris Elba took home two awards, celebrating his first win as best supporting actor for Netflix’s Beasts of No Nation, in which he plays an African warlord.

The 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards has just concluded.

Her co-star, Aduba, was the victor for best actress in a TV comedy for her role in the Netflix prison series.

“Look at this stage – I mean, this is what we talk about when we talk about diversity”, said series star Laura Prepon. Dicaprio won best actor for his performance in “The Revenant“, and this will be the actor’s 6th time nominated for an Academy Award.

Balloting was open during the #OscarsSoWhite backlash and closed on Friday.

Tom McCarthy’s journalism drama “Spotlight” won the outstanding cast honour, making it another strong contender for the best picture Oscar.

“[It is] a show that reflects and represents so many people”, said Aduba while accepting the award. The British actor’s win makes him the first man of any color to win two individual SAG awards in the same night.

Alicia Vikander picked up the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role award, for her turn as Gerda Wegener in Eddie Redmayne drama the Danish Girl.

Several black performers were honoured including Queen Latifah who was named Best Actress in a TV Movie or Mini-Series for “Bessie“.

Beasts of No Nation was considered by many critics as one of the best films of 2015, and yet it didn’t receive a single Oscar nomination.

Spotlight, a film drama about the true story of journalists in Boston who battled to reveal sexual abuse by Catholic priests, won the best film ensemble award, the SAG equivalent of a best film Oscar.

Amy Poehler and Tina Fey presented Carol Burnett with the Lifetime Achievement SAG Award. “So regardless what is going on with the academy, what is going on with Hollywood, they will find a way to be excellent”.
