Diversity Reigns at SAG

A Hollywood beset by a crisis over diversity will convene for the 22nd annual Screen Actors Guild Awards, where the night’s top film honor may be a toss-up between the ensembles of two fact-based tales: “The Big Short” and “Spotlight”.

Oscar nominee Saoirse Ronan, in the running for a lead movie actress SAG Award for Brooklyn, wore a long figure-hugging pink gown by Michael Kors. The 45-year-old star nabbed a trophy for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in Television Movie or Miniseries for her portrayal of blues singer Bessie Smith in the HBO biopic, Bessie. He has already won a Golden Globe and is an Oscar front-runner.

“Welcome to diverse TV”, Elba quipped later when he introduced “Beasts of No Nation“, nominated for its ensemble cast, to the audience.

Best Actor went to DiCaprio. Delighted by the win, she said in her speech, “Omigod, I am in shock right how”.

The TV categories seemed to represent the diverse landscape of the medium overall when compared to the film nominations; Idris Elba even made a quip in reference to “diverse TV” when stepping up to introduce Beasts of No Nation later on in the night.

Individual actor SAG winners the last three years have exactly corresponded with eventual Oscar winners, which meant that SAG winners Leonardo DiCaprio (“The Revenant”), Brie Larson (“Room“) and Alicia Vikander (“The Danish Girl“) all appear to have cemented their status as favorites.

“Spotlight” Wins Ensemble ‘No way, ‘ Mark Ruffalo said while accepting for the cast of Tom McCarthy’s acclaimed movie. “I asked him to SAGs, he said yes”, she tweeted with photos of both events. “More important than boycotting is openness”, Davis reportedly said backstage.

He returned to the stage minutes later when he scored his second win for Luther and said: “I don’t know what to say, thank you so much everyone in this room for giving me that”. Voting for the SAG winners concluded Friday, in the midst of the #OscarsSoWhite controversy, so perhaps SAG was sending a message to the Academy. “After four of them you forget your own name”.

Davis, who in September became the first African American to win best actress at the Emmys, won again for her performance in “How to Get Away With Murder“.

“Moreover, Jeffrey Tambor won best comedy series actor for playing Maura Pfefferman, an ageing wealthy transgender woman in Amazon’s Transparent“.
