Diversity the overall victor at Spirit Awards

Two of the night’s biggest awards went to Black actors-Beasts of No Nation stars Idris Elba and Abraham Attah.

Earlier in the night, Elba brought the young actor up with him to share his best supporting male actor award saying he could not have executed his role without him, Attah.

The film walked away with best original screenplay as well as best picture for its telling of the Boston Globe’s investigation into the Catholic church, but “Mad Max: Fury Road” nabbed the most awards of the night.

“What I want to leave with you guys today is there is transgender talent”.

“The Spirit awards honor the year’s best movies you’ve been meaning to see”, cracked Nanjiani.

Although there is very little overlap between the Spirits and Oscars voting bodies, three of the last four best feature winners in Santa Monica on Saturday went on to take best picture at the Dolby on Sunday.

The movie, which stars Mark Ruffalo, Rachel MCAdams, Michael Keaton and Liev Schreiber, nabbed the honour of Best Feature at the beachside ceremony in Santa Monica, California, on Saturday (27Feb16).

Laszlo Nemes’ “Son of Saul” took the worldwide award.

Spotlight, which is competing with The Revenant and The Big Short in numerous main categories at tomorrow’s 88th Academy Awards, also won best editing and a special prize for its ensemble cast.

Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The Look of Silence”, centered on the Indonesian genocide of the 1960s, took the documentary trophy.

“Quite honestly, we need studios like this who are going to step up when the other studios won’t”, said McCarthy, who also shared in best screenplay with his cowriter, Josh Singer. “I call dibs”, Heller said of her actress.

Collecting the award, she said: “I have had a long journey through 2015 because I had come from nearly nothing and then got this role and this movie, and my life just did a total 360”. In Saturday’s ceremony, none could top writer-director Trey Edward Shults, who won the John Cassavetes Award for first feature made for under $500,000 for his “Krisha”.
