The New Zealand single-seat motor racing star had been fastest in all three practice sessions in NY over the past two days before taking pole position with a lap of one minute 22.5259 seconds on Sunday morning (NZ time).
Dixon went back out front on lap 36, but the moment of the race – aside from Dixon’s dominance – came three laps later when Power tangled with Kimball in the esses and ended up in the wall. Kimball hit the left rear tire of Power’s No. 12 in the narrow section of the track at the top of the hill.
Power has fallen 43 points behind teammate Simon Pagenaud in the championship.
James Hinchcliffe ran out of the fuel on the final lap and finished one lap down in 18th. With this win, Dixon moves to 4th on the all-time list with 40 IndyCar victories. Dixon noted that Power has more experience in these title chases – he lost three times at the final race and won once – and has a stronger record in the Napa Valley.
The Verizon IndyCar Series returned to Watkins Glen International with a different racecar on a different racetrack – but nobody told that to Scott Dixon Sunday afternoon.

I’ve been brought up with nice tracks, so it’s a bit of a shock to the system when you come to bumpy surfaces.
He is sixth overall, more than 100 points behind French leader Simon Pagenaud. Will Power ended up 19th after he crashed on lap 39. I think in the past [Ganassi] has done a very good job with the championships that we’ve taken last minute, with Dario’s record and some of mine as well. We’ve had a good run there recently with the race victories.
“Will is doing fine”, Olvey said in IndyCar’s news release. Power had yet to pit and so was forced to make a stop under the caution, dropping him back into the mid-field.
The season finale at Sonoma Raceway is September 18.
