Dixon wins IndyCar race at Watkins Glen; Power crashes

With this win, Dixon moves to 4th on the all-time list with 40 IndyCar victories.

At one time Dixon owned this track, winning IndyCar’s first three trips here in 2005, 2006 and 2007. He is indeed one of the best to ever race in the series.

“The vehicle was just fantastic”, said Dixon. I know we’ve had some dominant weekends like this at ovals. Kansas rings a bell back in the day. The least amount you have to change and going from session to session trying to change your style and just trying to milk everything out of it, definitely helps.

For as much as it would seem Pagenaud will have an easy path to his first series championship, Power still has a legitimate chance to win his second title.

Simon Pagenaud finished seventh and increased his lead over Will Power to 43 points with one race left.

But Sunday at Watkins Glen International, Scott Dixon provided a timely reminder that he remains the best driver in the Verizon IndyCar Series. Dixon was far from done with his Glen magic.

Kimball, who survived the clash with Power and another that ended with Graham Rahal in the Turn 1 wall to finish sixth, was unrepentant. Through a cycle of stops, James Hinchcliffe and Castroneves took their turns out front for a couple of laps each. Dixon found his way back to the top spot when Castroneves headed pit side for service on lap 36. (8) Juan Pablo Montoya, Chevrolet, 60, Running 14.

Dixon managed his race well and, when Power crashed with Charlie Kimball on lap 39, the majority of the final pit stops took place under yellow flag conditions. If he is diagnosed with a concussion he must follow the IndyCar concussion protocol before returning to the track. Under the resulting caution all top cars pitted on lap 41.

“It was a lack of luck at the beginning, but it was a tough race”, the four-time Champ Car champion said.

Dixon’s margin of victory over Josef Newgarden was 16.5 seconds.

For a road course win, Dixon thought it was one of his most dominant races.

There’s no doubt that Dixon had a fantastic weekend at Watkins Glen and boosted his 2016 season tremendously. But the race can throw in so many different variables and Simon has just been rock solid in so many situations this season. He spent the last half of the race slowing his pace to save fuel. It’s been a challenge for both parties to promote such a large event in such a short three-month time window. “We still have to race hard, but it’s going to be a lot more comfortable”. He just kept following I think the 26 vehicle over, and ran me onto the grass, and when I bounced off the grass I bounced into him. This is pretty neat.

In qualifying Dixon also set a speed record for the track, something that came as no surprise, considering the recently re-paved surface. I’ve got to take the blame, too. “Anything less then that is a disservice to everyone”. We made it back in seventh and, for the championship, the day was very good. “But I’m happy to donate a fourth to that collection we have built up there”.

“Nobody will be disappointed by the attendance here this weekend”.

New Port Richey’s RC Enerson, in his second series race, was ninth. “The last caution made it so the guys in front had to save a lot of fuel, and we didn’t save enough at the start of the stint and were very slow”.
