Kyle Edmund’s first US Open ended in a crushing defeat by Novak Djokovic here last night but the 21-year-old Briton was taking only encouragement from his achievements at the tournament.

Djokovic showed no signs of being rusty despite only completing six games in the past two rounds because of injuries to Jiri Vesely and Mikhail Youzhny.
Djokovic posted an emphatic 6-2,6-1,6-4 win over his South African opponent Kyle Edmund in a one-sided fourth round contest that lasted one hour and 55 minutes.
Novak Djokovic takes on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the men’s singles quarter-final clash of the 2016 US Open on Wednesday (7 September).
“I actually think Kyle has a great shot to really trouble Novak Djokovic”, said Croft.
World number one Djokovic, the champion in NY in 2011 and 2015, has hardly broken sweat in the first four rounds. In the victory, Tsonga won 83 percent of his first serve points and 44 percent of his second serve points. Caroline Wozniacki, who won the first match in the stadium, said, “It’s a lovely court”. The world number one will face Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the quarterfinals on Tuesday.
Using a phone during a professional tennis match is not allowed, and chair umpire Alison Hughes noticed what was going on.
Kvitova hadn’t made it past the third round at the first three majors of the year but was coming off an Olympic bronze medal in Rio de Janeiro, where Kerber won the silver.
Sania Mirza and her Russian partner Ivan Dodig lost in straight sets to Barbora Krejcikova and Marin Draganja in the second round of the mixed doubles category at the US Open tennis tournament here on Sunday. He has reached at least the quarterfinals at 29 of the past 30 Grand Slam tournaments – the exception was his loss in the third round of Wimbledon in June against Sam Querrey. But when the two players last met at the Indian Wells in March 2016, Tsonga tested his higher-ranked opponent before going down 7-6 (2), 7-6 (2).
Djokovic ran out a 6-3 6-3 victor in Miami in March but Edmund’s recent form has been good, while the world No 1 has struggled with injuries and personal issues and could well have done with some extra match time over the last seven days.
Wozniacki is back in the last-eight of a major for the first time since making the semi-finals in NY in 2014.
But questions about the top seed’s fitness remain unanswered after he again took treatment on a sore right elbow at the start of the third set.
Anastasija Sevastova, who retired from tennis in 2013 due to injury, became the first Latvian woman to reach the US Open since 1994.
Four months after her defeat to Konta, the 26-year-old retired from tennis, fed up with injuries, and chose to take up a course in management.
“I do know her and I have been on court with her”, Konta said.
Fellow debutant Lesia Tsurenko of the Ukraine faces 2015 runner-up Roberta Vinci of Italy.
“This particular situation I never had in my Grand Slam career”.
