Djokovic dictated the rallies and played unusually quickly between points, seizing on the initial nerves of his opponent.

Edmund, who was beaten 6-2, 6-1, 6-4 in just an hour and 55 minutes, was the first British man other than Andy Murray to reach the fourth round here for 12 years and will jump around 30 places next week from his current position at No84 in the world rankings.

In Konta’s second-round match, the Australian Open semifinalist had collapsed to the court with trouble breathing, but she said there weren’t any significant lingering issues Sunday. “To play the world number one on the biggest tennis court in the world, doesn’t get much better than that”.

“It’s been a great tournament for me”.

Stuart Fraser of the Daily Mail said it took on the “feel of a first-round match” as the world’s No. 1 player advanced in Flushing Meadows, New York.

“She’s obviously playing very good tennis and I have a lot of respect for her”.

BRAND NEW STRIKER Nick Jarvis has been bitten by the deadly snake. can he get the antidote in time? He’s only 21. It’s his first Arthur Ashe match so he deserves applause.

If he is going to beat Djokovic, then he has to keep him on the court for a long time, but also try to keep the points shorter. “It was tough but I came off a lot happier than I was during the match because I started to impose myself in the third set”.

Djokovic continued to look like an unbeatable machine, winning the first two games of the third set.

And yet it was in that same game that Edmund began his mini-run.

It was more of the same in the second set, as the Serbian star won the first four games behind two breaks. From there on Djokovic played himself into form, exploiting Edmund’s movement by pulling him around the court like a rag doll. But on Sunday, he had just five aces and was broken six times.

After about 75 minutes Djokovic led by two sets and a break.

On one of those Edmund received a second serve but he completely shanked the forehand return.

After failing to covert one match point in the third-set tiebreaker, the ninth-seeded Tsonga dominated the fourth for the 6-3, 6-3, 6-7 (7), 6-2 victory Sunday. Dickson noted the trainer had to work on Djokovic’s right arm after the break, which was the “first sign of any frailty” from the Serb.

Edmund levelled the set with a hold of serve to love and he broke Djokovic again to win his third game in a row.

But he again needed treatment on his arm, with his right elbow seemingly the troubled area as he was attended to early in the third set.

Edmund will now reset his sights on this month’s Davis Cup semi-final against Argentina, where captain Leon Smith has a hard selection to make for the second singles slot, after Dan Evans also enjoyed a US Open to remember.
