Angelique Kerber, of Germany, returns a shot to Polona Hercog, of Slovenia, during the first round of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Monday, Aug. 29, 2016, in NY.

Djokovic’s wrist, the orginal injury concern he entered NY with, didn’t seem to bother him during the match.

It also came at a time when Novak Djokovic seemed virtually unbeatable – something that doesn’t seem so certain now. Vesely actually had a career 1-0 record against Djokovic after winning earlier this spring in Monte Carlo.

Novak Djokovic has dominated men’s tennis like no other player in the last few years. It’s all good. It’s getting better and better each day. “It hurt me a little bit”, Monfils said.

The fifth-seeded Raonic was treated by a trainer for problems with his left wrist and left thigh during Wednesday’s match and generally looked tired as play went on.

In Rio, the Serb, who has won six of the past nine Grand Slam events, was stunned by Juan Martin del Potro in the opening round. He repeatedly winced and shook out the arm, his serves far slower than usual.

Djokovic bounced back immediately, though, as he snatched a break at the first time of asking before wrapping up the third set in 33 minutes.

“Different surface, different circumstances, best-of-five”. So let’s see.”Obviously he hasn’t played many times on the Arthur [Ashe] Stadium”. “If you get to play there, it’s quite different”.

A former No. 1, Wozniacki is now ranked 74th after dealing with an ankle injury and a series of losses. He’s coming off his best performance at a major, a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon that included another win over a top-10 player in Dominic Thiem.

Djokovic claimed that the on-court treatment had been “just prevention” and that he had no problems.

“Jerzy is an unpredictable player, he has a big serve, he can serve over 140 miles per hour and when the ball comes at that speed, the only thing is react and pray you can get the ball back. I’m glad that I’m experiencing that so hopefully, as the tournament progresses, I’ll reach my peak”.

Kayla Day, just 16 and ranked at a lowly 374 in the world, was 6-2, 4-2 up on Madison Brengle when her fellow American quit with an injury. Day, ranked 374th, got into the tournament as the victor of the USTA Girls’ 18s National Championships.

Murray has one U.S. Open to his credit (2012), and he may be able to add to his total this year.

French Open victor Garbiñe Muguruza of Spain took three sets to beat Belgian Elise Mertens.

Fourth-seeded Rafael Nadal met his second-round opponent, Andreas Seppi, just over three weeks ago at the Olympics.

Muguruza carved out a gritty 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 win over Belgian qualifier Elise Mertens, ranked at 137.

Ivanovic is a former No. 1 player and 2008 French Open victor who has slipped to No. 31 in the rankings.
