Each of the two sets Sunday night required a tiebreaker, but Del Potro came out on top both times to secure a 7-6, 7-6 victory and advance to the second round.

“Delpo was the better player and he deserved to win”.

After tasting double failure at the Rio Olympics, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic has made a decision to skip the next week’s Cincinnati Masters, according to a tweet by journalist Alex Krstanovic.

“I am going slowly, I am trying to get better every day and I think I am doing well”, added del Potro, a bronze medallist at the London Games in 2012.

Del Potro served an ace. “Today I was having breakfast at nine o’clock”, said the Argentine whose build-up to his match with Djokovic on Sunday had been marked by him getting stranded in an elevator for 40 minutes.

“It’s very sad and disappointing to go out of the tournament this early but I am glad that a good friend of mine, who has struggled with injuries, has won”.

But del Potro held firm, winning a break point to make the match 4-2.

The 27-year-old, a former US Open victor, has dropped to 141st in the world after two years of injury problems but did not face a single break point on his serve against the 12-time Grand Slam champion.

“I just needed to relax”. He’ll be 33 at the 2020 Games in Tokyo, and he said Monday that “I really hope I will have another shot at the medal”. He finished the match with 16 forehand winners (compared to only one off the backhand wing). But then she dropped 5 of 6 games to fall behind 5-4. Hardly the first time she’s done that sort of thing – and likely not the last, either. Again, it was point-earned, point-lost. They had been 15-0 with three golds, but that streak is now over.
