Djokovic wins his fourth Canada Masters
“Canada has always had a long tennis tradition and has nurtured that tradition”, Djokovic said while addressing the crowd. “That’s it”, said Wawrinka with a smile.

“After Grand Slams, these are the biggest events we have in sport of tennis”, Djokovic told the media following the win.”I love playing in Masters tournaments throughout my career”. “It’s nice that we got to sense and feel that kind of energy around the stadium”. World number one Novak Djokovic defeated Japan’s Kei Nishikori 6-3, 7-5 yesterday to win the Toronto hardcourt tournament and claim his 66th career singles title.
The 12-time Grand Slam victor will now head straight to South American to begin preparations ahead of the start of the Olympics later this week. “In this tournament it is not working very well, but in general in past couple of years it has served me very well”.
Djokovic finished off victory with 13 winners on his third match point a game later with a service victor.
Nishikori, serving at 40-0, sealed victory on the first of his three match points when an overhead smash prompted an unforced error from his opponent, ending an encounter that lasted just under an hour-and-a-half.
He played his best when it mattered most, and after struggling at points with his serve against Monfils, he failed to register a double-fault today, and won nearly all the points from the baseline. “I still think he is beatable for somebody who believes, and Andy Murray could be that person”.
Kei Nishikori attempts to halt Djokovic’s tempo, as he wins the first game of the second set, in a bid to mount a comeback. Nishikori would convert the break point for a double break. This served him well this week. Djokovic took the set point.
Despite the Japanese star claiming three consecutive games in the second set to lead 4-3, Djokovic steadied the ship and the pair battled it out to 5-5. Djokovic was bolstered by a strong service performance as he won 82 per cent of his first serve points and recorded five aces. He had the championship point at deuces but put the ball into the net to give Djokovic advantage.
“I wouldn’t say I’ve been away from the game, I watched as much football as I can. And that’s a great lesson for me for the next time I will play against (Djokovic) again”.
According to Whitaker, Djokovic did not play his best tennis this week in spite of recording his 300 Masters 1000 title, eclipsing Rafael Nadal’s own record of 29. But it wasn’t unfathomable to believe third-seeded Nishikori could challenge – the Japanese right-hander had after all upset Djokovic at the 2014 U.S. Open.
Up 3-2 in the first set, the top-seeded Djokovic broke the third-seeded Nishikori for the first time to go up 4-2.
The convincing Djokovic win followed up Saturday’s dispatch of Gael Monfils as the Serb lifted his level at the business end of the week. Halep had some unfinished business to take care of at this tournament after reaching the final for the second straight year.
