Djokovic shut out Sock in the first game.

“At the beginning of the match I think we were both a bit rusty”, said Djokovic.

The second seed shrugged off a slow start, which saw him save four break points in his opening service game, to coast home in 65 minutes.

World number one Novak Djokovic, second seed Andy Murray and three-time champion Rafa Nadal were all cheered into the quarter-finals of the Rogers Cup on Thursday while controversial Australian Nick Kyrgios exited to boos and a hefty fine.

Djokovic needed 54 minutes to overtake the 35th-ranked Sock.

“People perceive Nick got dropped, but there was no way the way he was [mentally] he could have won that singles match, he just couldn’t do it”, Nill said.

He went up a break for 3-1 with a cheeky lob to take control of the first set of his third-round match against Muller. I was returning very well.

Kyrgios, who is well known for his outbursts off court and profanity on it, made a jibe at Wawrinka during the second set of their match about the Swiss player’s apparent girlfriend.

“In addition, Kyrgios has been served with a “notice of investigation” which begins a process to determine if his actions also constitute a violation of the Player Major Offence provisions”.

Djokovic will take on Ernests Gulbis in the quarterfinals on Friday. Djokovic returned with his usual power and precision and the American was only able to hit 38% of his second serves in (versus 75% for Djokovic).

“Washington was disappointing and it’s been a tough couple of long days with rain delays and late finishes, so it was nice to get out here and play a solid match without too much drama”, said Murray.

But seventh seed Nadal, in his first hardcourt appearance since March, showed few signs of rust as he used a dominating first serve to dust off Sergiy Stakhovsky of Ukraine 7-6 6-3.

Kyrgios’s sledge, his initial attempt to downplay it and issue of a belated apology only after his ATP sanction will reinforce the view that Australia has become a breeding ground for tennis brats, albeit highly talented ones.

If she keeps playing the way she has been this week in Toronto, she’ll quickly grow accustomed to playing top seeds late in tournaments.
