In a gesture of party unity, Sanders put forward Clinton’s name on Tuesday night to make her the first woman nominated for president by a major US party.

Democratic Party chairwoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz resigned over the weekend after Sanders’ campaign pounced on a number of leaked emails that they said showed that party officials had favored Clinton during the primaries. On Sunday, July 24, 2016, Wasserman Schultz announced she would step. Now, the Clinton and Trump campaigns are fighting over Russia’s role in the release of thousands of internal Democratic National Committee emails.

Demonstrators make their way around downtown, Monday, July 25, 2016, in Philadelphia, during the first day of the Democratic National Convention.

Kaine and Clinton made their debut as a presidential ticket on Saturday in Miami, when Clinton introduced him as her running mate at Florida International University. “I trust Hillary Clinton with our son’s life”. Other high-profile speakers include first lady Michelle Obama, former President Bill Clinton and Vice President Joe Biden.

While Mrs. Obama has often avoided overt politics during her almost eight years in the White House, her frustration with Trump’s rise was evident.

In the interview, Clinton also offered more details on her pledge to make sure the “middle class will not get a tax increase”, defining the “middle class” as those who earn less than $250,000 per year.

Clinton’s team hoped Wasserman Schultz’s resignation – along with an apology from the DNC to Sanders and his supporters – would keep the convention floor calm. Chants of “Bernie” echoed through the arena as the convention opened, and boos could be heard at times when Clinton’s name was raised. Outside the convention hall, several hundred marched down Philadelphia’s sweltering streets with signs carrying messages such as “Never Hillary”. But Sanders’ aides reached out to the Clinton campaign Monday afternoon to express concerns that supporters would still try to disrupt the proceedings, according to a Democratic official. He stunned the Clinton campaign with his broad support among young people and liberals, as well as his online fundraising prowess.

Discussions between the Clinton and Sanders camps prompted him to send emails and text messages to supporters asking them not to protest.

By the time Sanders took the stage for the night’s closing address, much of the anger had been overshadowed by speeches promoting party unity.

After the Republican National Convention, nominee Donald Trump’s support saw what looked like a spike.

But Sanders, meeting with New England delegates, said, “As of yesterday, I guess, officially our campaign ended”. Elizabeth Warren, who was expected to give a fervent address in favor of Clinton as well as denouncing Trump.

At the Republican convention, Mr. Trump cast himself as the law-and-order candidate in a nation suffering under crime and hobbled by immigration, sticking to the gloom-and-doom theme. While she has often avoided overt politics during her almost eight years in the White House, her frustration with Trump’s rise was evident. She warned that the White House couldn’t be in the hands of someone with “a thin skin or a tendency to lash out” or someone who tells voters the country can be great again. “She’s been a mess”, he said.

For Clinton, it was a turbulent start to a historic four-day gathering that will culminate in the nomination of the first woman to lead a major US political party. The hacked DNC emails fed the suspicion of Sanders’ supporters and sapped Clinton’s campaign of some of its energy following a well-received rollout Sunday of her running mate, Virginia Sen.

“So she picks a guy who is the opposite of Bernie and insane Bernie is going insane right now”.

“I am proud to be part of Bernie’s movement”, Silverman said as the crowd roared.

When the traditional roll call of states was taken Tuesday evening at the Democratic National Convention, Hillary Clinton officially won the presidential nomination, with 2,838 delegates.

Kaine took jabs at some of Trump’s more controversial positions, including a proposed ban on the entry of Muslims from other countries.

He contrasted the Hillary Clinton who was blasted in speech after speech at the Republican convention with Hillary he knows and loves – a kind, caring woman he called “the real one”.
