DNC Chair Resigns After Leaked Emails
Party officials were discussing that possibility, though it was unclear what the outcome would be, according to a person familiar with the discussions.

FILE – Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., accompanied by Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton, endorses Clinton during a rally in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, July 12, 2016.
After learning of her imminent resignation, Sanders said in a statement that Wasserman Schultz “made the right decision”. “I will open and close the Convention and I will address our delegates about the stakes involved in this election not only for Democrats, but for all Americans”.
The controversy over Wasserman Schultz came as the party looks to project unity following last week’s often fractious Republican convention. Most reports center around Debbie Wasserman-Schultz and the leaked emails that confirm how the DNC operated to undermine Bernie Sanders’ campaign. Instead, Congresswoman Marcia Fudge would hold that role.
“I don’t think it’s coincidental that these emails were released on the eve of our convention here, and I think that’s disturbing”, he said. “The national chair is never the permanent chair of the convention”. The DNC’s Rules Committee reportedly stripped Wasserman Schultz of her position as the convention chair.
Wasserman Schultz demurred when asked whether she would debate Canova, a political novice who has Sanders’ endorsement, ahead of the August 30 primary. I’ll take [Republican National Committee Chairman] Reince Priebus over her any day in terms of competence. “I always said that Debbie Wasserman Schultz was overrated”.
She said in a statement that her resignation is the “best way” to help get Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton elected in November.
Spokesman Marc LaVorgna says Bloomberg will make the endorsement speech Wednesday night.
Republican nominee Donald Trump tweeted himself Sunday, boasting about Priebus (and misspelling Wasserman Schultz’s last name). He has been sharply critical of some of Trump’s views. Bloomberg, who served three terms, later became an independent and a leading advocate for gun control.
Tourists cluster in the shadow of one of the towers of the Brooklyn Bridge, Sunday, July 24, 2016, in NY, as excessive heat continued to blanket the Northeast.
Party officials decided Saturday that Wasserman Schultz would not have a major speaking role or preside over daily convention proceedings this week. Social media channels also have been teeming with disgust toward the DNC and Wasserman Schultz specifically.
A cache of more than 19,000 party emails published Friday by the website WikiLeaks showed the suspicions of primary candidate Bernie Sanders were at least partly true: Party staffers favored eventual primary victor Hillary Clinton.
Clinton thanked Wasserman Schultz in a statement, saying “there’s simply no one better at taking the fight to the Republicans than Debbie”, adding that she still plans to campaign her in Florida. “I want to see that incorporated into the Democratic Party”, Sanders said. To retain her and deprive Sanders’ supporters of a vote on the VP nomination would create too much bad blood. Sanders’ supporters believe Kaine is not liberal enough.
Kaine – a former choir member at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church – sang a solo during Communion.
“A few in this room might be from countries of origin where you know something about dictators”, she said, aware of her Miami audience.
St. Elizabeth’s is a majority black church in Richmond’s Highland Park area.
And Sanders got his wish. He also suggested that Clinton’s choice of running mate, Virginia Sen. He is more conservative than I am.
“Well I think it’s outrageous but it is not a great shock to me”, he told CNN.
In one email out of the 200,000 leaked, the committee’s Chief Financial Officer Brad Marshall appears to float an idea to question Sanders’ Jewish faith.
She saw Wasserman Schultz’s ousting as a move “probably to appease” Sanders’ supporters.
The Vermont senator says a new leader is needed to focus the DNC on defeating Donald Trump, attracting young voters and improving the economy.
Emails posted online by Wikileaks and apparently stolen by hackers working for the Russian government seemed to show a plot by Democratic officials to damage Sanders. The release of the emails by Wikileaks brought the furor to a head this weekend. The convention begins tomorrow in Philadelphia.
