Doctor reveals technique for calming crying babies

A California doctor developed a four-step technique for soothing crying babies, entitled “The Hold”, which he shared in a viral video.

It’s called “The Hold” and Dr. Robert Hamilton, with Pacific Ocean Pediatrics in Santa Monica, Calif., showed it off in a video posted to YouTube Sunday. You will notice that the baby will instantly stop crying in few seconds and will be calm in this position. By Friday morning, it’d been watched more than 9 million times.

“You can see that he comforts pretty quickly”, Hamilton said as he effectively stopped one of the crying babies.

Lastly, the pediatrician said it is best to hold the baby with the fleshy area of the hands and not with the fingertips.

For children under 2-3 months old, it could work miracles – though most newborns outgrow “The Hold” after that point. While it’s widely known that folding an infant’s left and then right arm across her chest, then gently swaddling her, are effective ways to restore a sense of peace, Dr. Hamilton has recently drawn praise for identifying a specific maneuver that provides rapid results. The key is to make the sequence smooth and avoid jerky movements.

The technique works for the most part according to Dr. Hamilton, and for those cases when it won’t work, he advises to check if the baby is hungry or sick, wrote CBS News.
