The stroke had caused “lots of bleeding”, the head of the medical centre said.
Earlier, speaking to AFP outside the hospital near Tel Aviv where Peres is being treated, Walden said the elder statesman was initially admitted to hospital on Tuesday as a precaution.
“He will undergo a CT scan so as to get a full and updated assessment of his situation”.
Beyond his accomplishments in the public eye, Peres was also seen as a driving force in the development of Israel’s undeclared nuclear programme. “The way things seem now, we don’t think surgery in the next few hours would benefit Mr. Peres’ condition”.
Peres was rushed to hospital Tuesday after feeling ill and following a battery of tests was diagnosed to have suffered a stroke.
“I know that my father did not care about anything as much as he cares about people, as much as he cares about Israel, the Jewish people and the people in Israel”, he said.
“Shimon, we love you and the entire nation is wishing for your recovery”, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu tweeted . We are receiving a huge number of messages from Israel and overseas from all our friends who are surrounding us with love and care.
Current president Reuvem Rivlin added: “I am following with concern the updates from the hospital, and pray together with the entire people for my friend Shimon’s recovery”.
Opposition leader Isaac Herzog took to Twitter urging Peres to come back and make his “realistic voice heard”. It was announced that he was put under sedation to ease the continued treatment, and was connected to a respirator.
But, the 93-year old former president, twice interim prime minister, and Nobel Prize victor is a big part of Israel’s history.
He became director general of the nascent defence ministry at just 29 years old.
He served in different political parties, namely Mapai, Rafi, the Alignment, Labor and Kadima.
After Rabin was assassinated in 1995, Peres became prime minister, calling early elections so the government would have a mandate to pursue a two-state solution.
Peres is one of the architects of the Oslo Accords.
