Doctor Who newcomer Pearl Mackie has spoken of the importance of minorities being represented on screen, saying when she was growing up there were few people that looked like her on television. While many famous faces, such as Ben Whishaw and Tilda Swinton, have been tipped to take on the role as the 13th Doctor, for now we’re turning down the volume on the chatter to focus on the best of Capaldi as the Doctor.
The Emmy Award-winning producer added that “the correct response should be: ‘What took you so long?'”
With regard to the Doctor’s regeneration, Capaldi revealed that he filmed his “death” scene and about it said, “I can’t tell you what’s going to happen, but it’s going to be very interesting”. Her reactions to the Doctor’s quips aren’t too overstated and don’t veer into whimsy territory, meaning she thankfully doesn’t come across as a caricature. Her attraction to a girl with a defect in her eye leads her into waters of another kind – choppy ones that begin to stalk her. She’d be curious. And, crucially for the requisite moment when she willingly clambers into a spaceship hidden inside a blue police box, she’d have to be relentless.
In the first episode of 12 in this series, The Doctor pops up in Bristol University where Bill works in the student cafe. So here’s a quick breakdown.

When Mackie arrived on set in Valencia, Spain, she received welcome gifts, including a card from Coleman with tips on what not to eat in the cafeteria and such. Her foster Mum seems to be a single parent, raising the orphaned Bill. As the Doctor told her earlier, “Hardly anything is evil, but most things are hungry”, and the influence of Heather’s last conscious thought-a promise not to leave Bill-has left the entity desiring her company. She has this ridiculous sense of self that only the finest narcissists of this world can really appreciate.
Classic Doctor Who Recommendation: “The Time Warrior”, from 1973, starring Jon Pertwee and Elisabeth Sladen as Sarah Jane Smith, whose curiosity draws her into the Doctor’s life in much the same way as Bill’s does here.
According to The Mirror, a source revealed when Kris would first appear as Doctor Who. “She doesn’t need any advice from me”. “I love what the show has done, and I love Matt and David and Chris”. She’s amusing, confident, smart – though she may not realize just how intelligent she is – and has no fear about telling the Doctor exactly what she thinks.
