Doctors describe shark bite wound after California attack

Lifeguards and officials in the city of Newport Beach were meeting Tuesday to decide whether to reopen Corona Del Mar State Beach, which was closed to swimmers and surfers after Sunday’s attack.

The woman, who was swimming in a wetsuit, was bleeding heavily after a lifeguard boat spotted her in distress Sunday, city spokeswoman Tara Finnigan said.

A 12-year-old boy’s lazy Memorial Day at a Florida beach took a scary, bloody turn when he suffered what local officials say might be a shark bite.

Shark Lab director Chris Lowe at California State University, Long Beach, said the large single bite suggests the shark is over 10 feet long, and most likely a great white.

Lifeguard Andy Matsuyama and Capt. Mike Ure were patrolling on a boat about 30 yards from Korcsmaros when they noticed an unusual splash of white water and saw the woman jolted to the side.

Lifeguards pulled her from the water, and she was rushed to the emergency room, where she appeared alert and “remarkably calm”, Rotter told reporters at the hospital.

“It extends from the upper torso area down to the pelvis”, Sauri said.

Doctors said they looked for teeth left behind by the shark but didn’t find any. The doctors also said her level of physical fitness help save her life, allowing her to tread water after the attack until she was rescued.

Korcsmaros’ Twitter feed indicates she teaches classes with the City of Corona’s Parks and Recreation Department, including one titled “Core Nutrition and Smart Exercise”.

Maria Korcsmaros, 52, needed to be hospitalized for at least another week and that only time will tell if she will have full use of her right arm, doctors said at a hospital news conference. The woman’s condition is unknown, but she was conscious when brought to the hospital. Korcsmaros is an aerobics and fitness trainer in Corona and a mother of three – aged 16, 22, and 24.

Lifeguards cleared the water from the state beach to the Newport Pier, a stretch of more than two miles. Experts are predicting there will be another hike in shark attacks this summer as well. In light of the amount of significant damage, she was described as doing “remarkably well at this point”.

And across the United States in Neptune Beach, Florida, a shark bit a 13-year-old boy on the calf while he waded in the water, according to the Washington Post. Researchers are, in effect, now testing surveillance equipment which would give people an early warning if they’re swimming with sharks.

But with more sharks and more people in the water, “I think the rate of shark attack is going to continue to go up”, Lowe said.

Scientists believe the white shark population off California has been increasing, Lowe said.
