Dodgers’ Brett Anderson to miss three to five months after back surgery

The team announced pitcher Brett Anderson will miss three to five months after undergoing surgery to fix a bulging disk in his back.

The Los Angeles Dodgers were hoping that starter Brett Anderson could stay healthy for two straight seasons for the first time in his career, but that will not be the case heading into 2016. “Talking to him two days ago and then yesterday, he just thought it would be a couple of days and would subside”. “It wasn’t near the sensation he had before”.

The Dodgers, who face the hard task of replacing Zack Greinke, will now have their depth tested as they look to replace a pitcher who tossed over 180 innings last season.

A 28-year-old left-hander, Anderson was 10-9 with a 3.69 ERA last season.

While with Colorado in 2014, Anderson was injured during a start on August 5 and had season-ending surgery for a herniated disk in his lower back.

“I’ll always be in prehab mode”. He was scheduled to undergo arthroscopic surgery in Phoenix on Thursday.

“I was shocked”, Roberts said of the news. “Hopefully it will mean being strong for 30-plus starts rather than getting my body through those starts”.

In the interim, this strengthens Alex Wood’s claim on a rotation spot if not cements it, and it opens up an opportunity for Brandon Beachy and Mike Bolsinger to take another spot. Young prospects Jose De Leon, Julio Urias and Ross Stripling are less likely to make the jump to the big leagues as Anderson’s replacement. The depth of the Dodgers starting rotation will once again be tested, especially with Hyun-Jin Ryu out for a while. “You can’t plan for anything in baseball”.
