Dodgers flip score on Giants in extra inning win

Behind one of the best pitching matchups in the game, the San Francisco Giants were unable to outlast the Los Angeles Dodgers in another 10 inning game. Thompson had two hits for the Dodgers (4-3), who had opened the season with three consecutive shutout wins over the San Diego Padres before surrendering a total of 26 runs to the Giants.

St. Louis, swept in its opening three-game series at Pittsburgh, avoided its first 0-4 start since 1997.

“It does a lot”, manager Dave Roberts said. “I mean, we could have won four games”. Kyle Hendricks (1-0) pitched four-hit ball into the seventh. The Dodgers were on the other side of a 3-2 result in 10 innings a night earlier.

The Dodgers head home after an incredibly frustrating weekend in San Francisco, one that saw them drop three of four games to the Giants, including Sunday’s 9-6 disappointment.

Bumgarner hit a solo home run off Kershaw in the second inning, his second in two seasons against his National League West rival. “Obviously, I hadn’t been built up to throw that many pitches so it makes sense”.

“There’s some good mojo in this clubhouse”, he said.

The power came in the third, with Posey tagging a mistake changeup for a long home run. It’s supposed to be the easiest out you have. He’s a pretty solid hitter. It was the first time in Kershaw’s career he allowed home runs to the bottom two hitters in the order.

Bumgarner blasted his second career home run off Kershaw – and 12th overall – to kick it off in the third inning. Four times in the first eight innings they had a batter lead off an inning with a double. Because of the Dodgers’ go-ahead run in the top of the tenth, Kontos dropped to 0-1 to start the season.

Adrian Gonzalez tied the game with an RBI groundout against Santiago Casilla with one out in the ninth. On Friday against the Braves, they hit three pinch-hit dingers in one night. “I made that decision if somebody gets on base, we’re going to go to (Chris Hatcher)”.

“Throughout the lineup, we have guys who can drive the ball”, manager Bruce Bochy said. “To get us seven innings and help the bullpen out and give the offense a chance to get back in the game was really big”.

Instead, Dodgers manager yanked Stripling after 7 1/3 innings and 100 pitches. Both teams deserved to win all four games, and it is for that very reason that the Giants should be happy.

Kershaw struck out Bumgarner in his next at-bat, but Adrianza, making his first start of the season in place of Friday’s hero, Brandon Crawford, belted the next pitch just inside the foul pole to give the Giants the lead.

The new deal calls for a $6 million signing bonus, a $2.8 million salary for 2017 and $16 million annually from 2018-21.

L.A. placed outfielder Carl Crawford on the 15-day disabled list with a lingering lower back injury. It was only the second time in his career Kershaw has allowed a home run to a No. 9 hitter – joined by Bumgarner s first home run off Kershaw previous year.

Los Angeles finishes its road series with the Giants tomorrow afternoon before hosting the Arizona Diamondbacks during the week and then reconvening with a follow up fight with the Giants at Dodger Stadium next weekend. Sale had retired 12 straight before an infield single and Mike Napoli’s two-run homer to center in the sixth tied it. Yan Gomes’ solo shot an inning later put the Indians ahead before Chicago’s rally.
