Dodgers stoke rivalry with taunting anti-Bumgarner shirts

Scully will work the booth for the final time when the Dodgers visit the Giants on October 2 in San Francisco. They’re losing parts. But they’re not dead yet.

Cueto (17-5) threw 5 and 1/3 shutout innings before he left the game with a strained groin with one out in the sixth.

But they still managed to do something they couldn’t do Monday night – make a lead stand up.

Dodgers players had taken pictures of themselves in shirts of their own earlier in the day, with their hands over their eyes.

There have been few pitchers as consistent as Bumgarner since he entered the rotation full-time in 2011 for the Giants. The Giants are now tied with the Cardinals for the second NL Wild Card spot, one game behind the Mets, who hold the first wild-card. Their magic number to eliminate the Giants in the division race is seven.

In the end, the “brawl” may have hurt the Giants more than the Dodgers. Clayton Kershaw, in his third start since returning from the disabled list, pitched six innings, allowed three hits and an unearned run while striking out seven.

Freddie Freeman continued his road mastery of the New York Mets Monday night, when the Atlanta Braves first baseman collected four hits – including a homer – and three RBIs to lead the Braves to a 7-3 win at Citi Field. But none even got as far as third base. In his first start against LA, he allowed five runs in the first inning. On the other side, Rich Hill has been absolutely phenomenal for the Dodgers. Bumgarner did not walk a batter and struck out 10.

But Hill also gave up a long drive to Eduardo Nunez with two outs in the fifth inning.

Washington rookie center fielder Trea Turner misplayed two fly balls, leading to three runs, and the Miami Marlins used those mistakes to rally past the Nationals. It was the eighth one-run game among 14 meetings between the rivals this season, with the teams winning four each. That was standard through the first six innings.

Cueto’s been fantastic for the Giants this season, but he’s been especially tough on the Dodgers. “You can’t let yourself get too high or too low”.

Bochy stuck with Okert and another left-hander, Will Smith, to keep the shutout intact into the ninth. However, the San Francisco manager remains confident the Giants can reverse their fortunes and play their way into the postseason.
