Does Brock Osweiler Trade Complicate Potential Jimmy Garoppolo Trade With Browns?

In a shocking twist, the Houston Texans have traded Brock Osweiler to the Cleveland Browns along with a second-round draft pick in 2018.

For the Browns, the trade was about acquiring the Texans’ second-round pick in 2018, the person said. They won’t trade 4 him.

Among others proposing that scenario was Mary Kay Cabot, a longtime Browns beat writer.

The Browns have been aiming to acquire Garoppolo, but the New England Patriots’ asking price has been very high.

Tony Romo’s availability absolutely has been on Houston’s radar-he is considered a system fit for Bill O’Brien. However, the 49ers signed free agent Brian Hoyer to a two-year contract while reportedly committing to him as the starter, at least for this season.

Osweiler earned the four-year contract after stepping in for future Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Peyton Manning for part of the 2015 season, one that ended with the Broncos beating the Carolina Panthers in Super Bowl 50.

To make the deal work – the Browns couldn’t just take Osweiler and a second-round pick and give up nothing – the teams also exchanged 2017 draft picks.

“Draft picks are extremely important to our approach in building a championship caliber football team”, Brown added. Two league executives declined to comment on the trade, other than to ask if the NFL had officially approved it.

Cleveland was bound to land some huge star, and their $100 million salary cap made that possible for them.

Just as quickly as the noise started, it quieted – because the Browns true intentions quickly became known. The Houston quarterback went 20-for-29 for 186 yards, one touchdown and one interception while completing 69.0 percent of his passes.

My understanding is #Browns are expected to make a run at Jimmy G. They can offer the most. The Browns will nearly certainly take defensive end Myles Garrett with the first pick, while the 12th is probably the best available player. In return, the Browns are giving up a fourth-rounder in 2017, while absorbing $16 million in salary this season. The Browns get a nice pick and a guy that can compete for the starting job. Between 2016, ’17 and ’18, the Browns will have 10 first- and second-round picks. The NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported that the teams also will swap compensatory picks.
