Romeo’s owners were sleeping on the second floor of their house in San Lorenzo a Flaviano when the natural disaster struck on August 24, killing 294 people.

A dog has been rescued from the rubble of the quake that rocked central Italy after being trapped for nine days.

Leo got to shake paws with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and Italian Premier Matteo Renzi when they greeted rescue crews who saved people from damaged buildings.

Romeo was given water – and is said to be doing well.

When the owners called out Romeo’s name, the dog responded with barking, and firefighters were able to locate him under the rubble.

Video of the Friday rescue was released by the Italian Fire Brigade.

Romeo appeared nonplussed by the sudden change in his surroundings, although his tail was wagging.

In Italy, at least 120 people died in the magnitude-6.2 quake that caused significant destruction in the cities of Accumoli and Amatrice.

The hashtag #CharlieHebdo was soon trending on Twitter, with many expressing disgust at the cartoon for ridiculing the victims of the quake, which killed almost 300 people and left many villages in ruins.

Numerous magazine’s editorial staffers were among the 12 people killed in the January 2015 attack.

Vasco Errani, the government’s reconstruction supremo, vowed today that hundreds of people made homeless by the quake would be back in houses “in your own territory” within seven months.
