In this Tuesday, September 15, 2015, photo provided by Amy Carey, of Vashon Island Pet Protectors, a setter mix named Tillie, left, watches over Phoebe, a basset hound who was trapped after falling into the cistern almost a week earlier before being rescued by searchers on Vashon Island, Wash.

He added that Tille was an 11-year-old Irish Setter and Spaniel mix he’s had since she was a puppy and that Phoebe was 4 and just adopted two years ago after the two hit it off at a doggie daycare. The kind human called Vashon Island Pet Protectors, an animal rescue organization that’d been aiding in the search for the dogs, and the dogs were found. “It turned out the dog was Tillie trying to get help for Phoebe, who had gotten stuck”.

Finally someone noticed Tillie turning toward a ravine, which led right to Phoebe.

Ms Carey said they had been searching for about a week when a farmer contacted them and said a “reddish” dog had been hanging around their property.

Tillie left each day for short periods to go find help.

A loyal dog stayed and protected her trapped best friend while the pair waited days for help.

The dogs were starving and exhausted but otherwise in good health, according to Carey and Duft. They all celebrated with a hamburger dinner. Had she run up, we might have never realised that Phoebe was down there.

“When I got there and looked down, Tillie saw me, but didn’t come running up”, Ms Carey said.
