DOH: 53% drop in fireworks-related injuries in 2015
The Department of Health (DOH) reported a 53-percent decrease in firecracker-related injuries as of Friday morning (January 1), as compared to the same period a year ago.

DoH records show that 36 more people were injured from firecracker blasts as of 6 a.m. of December 31, bringing to 181 the total number of firecracker-related injuries since the monitoring started.
New Year’s firecrackers left at least one man dead and 380 others injured, and caused a fire that gutted 1,000 shanties in the Philippines despite rain and a government warning campaign, officials said Friday.
“Every year, we see the things that we need to strengthen in order to achieve our goal, and eventually, we do hope that we will attain zero casualties from fireworks or firecrackers during the holidays”, Garin said in a press conference.
A total of 155 or 86 percent of the victims were males; 133 of them sustained hand injuries while 20 suffered head injuries.
DOH said the girl was playing near Ipo Dam when she was hit by a stray bullet in the back on Christmas Eve.
With the number of firecracker-related injuries, hospitals are now on “code white” alert, which means that all resident physicians are on duty.
The lone fatality in Thursday’s revelry was drunk when he hugged a lighted firecracker in Manila, said Health Secretary Janette Garin.
Most of the cases were recorded from Metro Manila, Bicol Region, and Calabarzon.
Meanwhile, the cases of fireworks ingestion remain zero, according to the DOH.

Since Dec. 21, the DOH has placed all its retained hospitals and facilities under “Code White” to ensure that all DOH hospitals are prepared to attend to injuries related to fireworks.
