Dolly Parton’s Pure & Simple

“I don’t care whether it’s your race, whether you’re green, blue, black, red, or alien gray, or whether you’re male or female, or transgender”, she added. “I thought love would be the great theme and I did write several about mine and Carl’s relationship”.

That experience led Dolly to name-check the British singer in a song on her new album, Pure & Simple, called “Head over High Heels”. Well, it isn’t going to tick the boxes for the fans of her bouncier hits, but for those that love a well-constructed, simply penned song, Pure and Simple has a lot to offer.

“When she had her [cat-eye] makeup, you know the way everybody’s trying to do their eyes, and I do makeup all the time”, Parton explained. Parton’s recent nuptials were low key, just a small ceremony at her Nashville home. With its delicate banjo, Never Not Love You has an autumnal flavour, while I’m Sixteen is warmly nostalgic.

A mostly stripped down set (hence the title) featuring eight new songs and two re-treads of old numbers she used to perform with Porter Wagoner back in the 1970s, Pure & Simple is at best a middle shelf release in Parton’s discography. But she found someone! I watch them and I get such a kick to see how happy they are and I think, ‘God they think they are 16!

“I got so excited”, Parton said about coming up with the line.

“As soon as I could, I started my own publishing company, got my own record label”, Parton told CNNMoney’s Christine Romans. Parton focuses on pared down arrangements in favour of an album of love songs and simplicity. Additionally, SiriusXM has declared next Friday, Aug. 26 “Dolly Day”, on Prime Country and will air the Dolly Parton: “Pure & Simple” special on the Prime Country channel at 9am ET, 3pm ET and 10pm ET.
