She had been under hospice care since Nov.9, surrounded by family and the couple’s young daughter, IN – named for Feek’s native state, where much of her family still lives and where the couple had spent much of their time.
Faced with arranging a funeral for the wife that meant everything to him, the Joey+Rory singer shared his heartbreak.
Joey Martin Feek, of the country music duo Joey & Rory, perform at the Fremont Street Experience during the Academy of Country Music Weekend in Las Vegas on Saturday, April 17, 2010.
“Joey will still be with us. And all her tears are dry”, Rory wrote. “My precious bride had her last breath”.
Just when we thought this story couldn’t get any more heartbreaking, Rory Feek went ahead and posted a very touching Instagram message on March 5, making it the first time he’s spoken out since revealing Joey died on March 4.
Joey’s goal was to at least make it to Indiana’s second birthday and she was glad to be able to make it. She even witnessed another milestone of her daughter in which she spoke her first word and it was “Mama”. Rory Feek wrote last week that Joey will “most likely only be with us for a few more days”. “There have been too many attractive moments to count or even begin to share…but I try”, he added. Soon after, the duo signed with Sugar Hill/Vanguard Records, releasing an album, The Life of a Song. “I know everybody says that, but you know, this is one of those times that everything we’re doing, we are both interested in”. Since her diagnosis, the music community responded by honoring the couple with award nominations.

Feek will be laid to rest in a private service at the Feek family cemetery, according to Owens Memorial Services in Alexandria. Although their songs were never top airplay hits, the couple’s plainspoken style and Joey Feek’s sweet, smoky voice earned them a host of fans of traditional country and western music.
