Dolphins fire Philbin, hope to salvage season
The Dolphins went 24-28 under Philbin, a Worcester Academy graduate.

With Joe Philbin out as the Miami Dolphins’ head coach, the team has turned its attention to finding his replacement.
For the second successive year an National Football League head coach has paid with his job for a Transatlantic defeat, with the Oakland Raiders removing Dennis Allen last September following their 38-17 loss to the Dolphins in the capital.
That explains plenty about the Patriots’ long-running supremacy in the division.
We’ll see if Miami can turn it around when they return to the field in week six when they travel to Tennessee to take on the Titans.
That may be true, but the jury is still very much out on this team. Certainly, with Coach Belichick, he’s truly a one-of-a-kind coach. We have the staff, okay.
There were rumors that Philbin would be fired at the end of last season, but instead he received a contract extension and will be paid through the 2016 season. Rex Ryan, after being fired from the Jets, is in Buffalo.
Eleventh-year signalcaller Ryan Fitzpatrick echoed Bowles’ sentiments. But he was also low-key, and players said Campbell – at 39 the NFL’s youngest coach – had already given the team a needed jolt of energy.
Of course, quarterback play also comes into the equation. However, a non-existent running game, poor pass protection, ineffective play from Tannehill, mediocre defensive play, and of course, poor coaching have led the Dolphins to a disappointing record of 1-3. “It’s the fourth game of the season”, Philbin said. The Jets have had seven.
The Oklahoma drill – named for longtime Oklahoma University coach Bud Wilkinson – is a full-contact, full-speed drill that includes players either blocking or tackling (or both) in a confined area. And that’s the first thing I’m changing – I’m going to challenge these guys. Just a great man that we all learned from within in the building.
“We need to get our front four on defense, our front five on the offensive line, just as a whole, we need to breed a culture of competitiveness, finish and intensity and to me that’s where it all starts”. Their practices have been against a rattled, terrified quarterback.
It won’t be easy to attain championship No. 5.

Let’s make one thing clear about Joe Philbin; he didn’t get fired because he’s a boring guy and not fiery enough. “He finds a lot of players who fit into that system”. “He’s a lot of fun to be around, but at the same time, he’s going to work the mess out of you. I felt this was the best opportunity we have – to pick Dan Campbell as our head coach”. The team isn’t going to change its 4-3 system or its verbiage midway through the season.
