Domestic Revenue Hit $11-B In 2015 With ‘Star Wars’
The top film is Avatar with a $US760.5 million lifetime U.S. domestic gross, but Star Wars is barrelling in to surpass it soon. Avatar, meanwhile, needed 47 days to pass the $600 million mark of Titanic. The Tina Fey/Amy Poehler comedy dipped only 11% this weekend to earn an estimated $12.6 million. The Force Awakens has opened worldwide with the exception of China, where it will debut this weekend.

“The Force” is still strong in the Philippines as “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” is set to return to Philippine cinemas on January 8. Hateful Eight got a nice surge from the previous week, because of a surprise digital expansion that saw the film go from 100 screens to 2,474.
The space saga has broken ticket-sales records around the world with an estimated $1.5 billion globally. That brings it to $67 million domestic and $24 million foreign for a $91 million worldwide total.
But “The Hateful Eight“, the latest film from bad boy director Quentin Tarantino, more than tripled its opening-weekend take to surge from tenth to third on the list, at US$16 million for the three-day period. Sisters and Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip stand at the fifth spot.
Joy had a slightly harder fall than expected for the type of genre it is. The film has earned $US61.7 million so far.
Many Christmas Day releases enjoyed healthy staying power thanks to holiday vacations: “Joy”, “The Big Short” and “Concussion” all saw second-weekend grosses dip less than 40%. The stop-motion film about a customer service expert in the throes of an emotional crisis was directed by Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson. It placed 8 with $8 million for the weekend.
Point Break, a remake of the 1991 cult favourite about extreme sports enthusiasts who double as bank robbers, is shaping up to be a costly dud.
The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2, $US4.6 million ($US4.4 million international). Titanic grossed $1.5 billion internationally to its $658 million domestic.
