“Suicide Squad” slipped to number two at $12.2 million.
The low-budget horror movie raked in a surprising estimated $26.1 million in the USA and Canada, well surpassing analyst projections of $12 million to $14 million.
Jason Statham’s new action film with Jessica Alba, Mechanic: Resurrection, rounds out the new top five at five, just behind Kubo and the Two Strings, which features the voices of Matthew McConaughey and Charlize Theron, and Seth Rogen’s animated adult comedy Sausage Party at three and four, respectively. “The Shallows, ‘ “Sausage Party” and now ‘Don’t Breathe” were all incredibly profitable because they were made for modest budgets and did incredibly well at the box office”, Greenstein said. It landed a $7.5 million fifth place, well below its predecessor’s $11 million opening and a poor start against its $40 million price tag.
The Roadside Attractions film opened with US$3.1 million to place 13th. After nabbing $56.8 million from 62 territories, according to Variety, it’s now the second-highest grossing Bourne film of all time, pulling in over $347 million worldwide. “Don’t Breathe”, starring Jane Levy and Stephen Lange, pulled in an additional $1.9 million overseas, bringing its worldwide total to $28.0 million. Next weekend closes out the summer movie season with the release of the sci-fi film “Morgan” and the romantic drama “The Light Between Oceans”.
“Mechanic: Resurrection”, $7.5 million ($6.1 million international). The CGI/live actiion hybrid remake now has $54.7 million domestically and $76.2 million worldwide on a $65 million budget.
