Don’t Breathe wins the weekend box office

This being the penultimate week in the summer movie season it has become clear things are winding down.

The weekend figure for Don’t Breathe came in at an excellent $26.1 million, awesome for this late into August, and proof again that any film can open successfully at any time – as long as all the elements are in the right place. The film added $1.9 million in a smattering of overseas markets for a $28 million worldwide first weekend.

New thriller “Don’t Breathe” opened in the number one spot at the North American box offices this weekend, with 26.1 million US dollars in ticket sales. The difference between them is so nuanced that only a skilled director, like Fede Alvarez, can show you the difference in his latest film, “Don’t Breathe”. Rounding out the top five was the debut of Jason Statham’s new action flick with Jessica Alba, Mechanic: Resurrection which brought in $7.5 million. It landed a $7.5 million fifth place, well below its predecessor’s $11 million opening and a poor start against its $40 million price tag. Don’t expect that to happen. Given how intriguing it looks, there’s no reason to think Don’t Breathe won’t reach its expected numbers this weekend as well.

“Hands of Stone” from the Weinstein Company only managed to gross $1.73M across 810 locations. Southside tells the story of the first date of Barack and Michelle Obama and was quite the hit at this year’s Sundance Film Festival which is where it was acquired for distribution by Miramax and Roadside. “The Shallows, Sausage Party and now Don’t Breathe were all incredibly profitable because they were made for modest budgets and did incredibly well at the box office”, Greenstein said. The film should stay afloat thanks to strong critical reviews, however, as it’s one of the best-reviewed titles of the week (93 percent on Rotten Tomatoes with an average rating of 7.4/10). “Hands of Stone” was written and directed by Jonathan Jakubowicz, the film stars Edgar Ramírez, Usher Raymond, Robert De Niro and Ana de Armas. Considering we’re heading into the Labor Day holiday weekend next week, it’s safe to make the argument that “Don’t Breathe” will reign supreme at the box-office for a second consecutive weekend.

Next week is a weak one for new releases as onlu two films will make their debut. Still expanding and still faring well was Hell or High Water which went from 472 to 909 theaters and grossed an estimated $3.7M for a good $4,098 average. The animated film now has $24.9 million domestically and $27.6 million worldwide from a $60 million budget.
