He said the improvement in relations between the two countries was significant to regional peace, stability and development.
In this photo released by Press Information Department, India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi, right, reviews guard of honor with his Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif in Lahore, Pakistan, Friday, Dec. 25, 2015.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi paid an over-two-hour unscheduled visit to Pakistan that was seen very important as relationship warmed up in recent weeks.
They also reminded PM that violations of LoC, infiltrations and cross-border terrorism were going on unabated.
Nawaz donned the Indian Rajasthani pink turban during Modi’s surprise visit on Friday, a source at Nawaz’s Jaati Umra residence told the Press Trust of India (PTI). It was described as a spontaneous goodwill visit. But the fact that Sharif was in Lahore, and his invitation to the Indian PM to visit his Raiwind home, raised security concerns among Indian officials. The Pakistani premier, flanked by cabinet ministers, received Modi on the tarmac where military officers lined up along a red carpet.
Chairman of the main opposition of Pakistan Peoples Party, Bilawal Bhutto, welcomed Modi’s visit.
Stating that every youth associated with IITs, IIMs, Central Universities and NITs in the country will be linked to this programme through live connectivity, Modi said the talent of our youth is not restricted to a few cities. “It’s a new Modi in an old bottle; Nawaz Sharif should take it one sip at a time”.
Marketing the go to a “duel standard” from the government, the commanders claimed that Modi had obtained “u-turn”.
General Ved Prakash Malik, a former Indian Army chief, agreed. The surprise visit also highlights the fact that he wants to conduct substantive engagement away from limelight. Later, the two men met in November 2014 in Kathmandu for the SAARC Summit amidst high drama.
Given Pakistan’s centrality in bringing the Taliban to the negotiating table, the U.S. has, for weeks, been nudging New Delhi and Islamabad to resume dialogue, last suspended in 2013. There was no mention of Kashmir in the statement.
A Pakistani report on Saturday said they discussed Kashmir too. Bangkok was chosen because India had earlier cancelled the visit of Janjua to Delhi as he wanted to meet Kashmir separatist leaders of Hurriyat. Two days later, External Affairs Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj landed in Islamabad to attend the Heart of Asia conference which engages “heart of Asia” countries for a peaceful and stable Afghanistan.
