Don’t expect Sony to make another portable

Some gamer must have been really annoyed by Sony not allowing PlayStation (PS) Vita games to be played on PlayStation TVs, so annoyed that it drove him to find a bug in the PS TV code that he could exploit to grant him the ability to play Vita games.

As for the Vita, it’s only a matter of time. Sony is seeing massive success with their PlayStation 4, despite the track records with Vita and PlayStation TV so whatever comes next will be nothing if not interesting.

“People have mobile phones, and it’s so easy to play games on smartphones”, he said. I myself am a huge fan of the Vita, and we worked really hard on designing every aspect. Therefore, occasional touch-based mini-games shouldn’t be a big concern. But having sticks and buttons make things totally different.

“That’s a tough question”, he replied when asked about a PlayStation Vita 2. However, Yoshida also added alongside that he is not expecting the launch of a Vita 2 version in the near future. Nonetheless, he also highlighted the fact that, at present, dedicated portable market is “not healthy” because mobile devices are increasingly dominating the portable-gaming scenario.

We haven’t been able to test the hack for ourselves yet, but Vita Reviews has a growing list of Vita games and apps that are newly playable on a hacked PlayStation TV system.

While not all games utilize these features, Sony went on to implement a controversial whitelist for their PlayStation TV microconsole that would prevent Vita games from being played on it, a decision which our technical users might see the point of implementing. It’s just not working out the way Sony had hoped but indeed, there are culture and market reasons.
