And Modi described the ongoing exploitation of Dalits, who lie at the bottom of India’s deeply entrenched social hierarchal system, as shameful.
‘Why should we exploit our Dalit brothers?
‘It is our responsibility to protect and respect the persons from society’s lowest rung’.
“Modi was silent for the last two years”.
Footage showed four half-naked men tied to a auto as the activists took turns to thrash them with belts and batons at a crowded marketplace.
The party and the government have been receiving complaints from across the state for a long time about elements indulging in extortion and violence in the name of VHP and Bajrang Dal, two outfits which have been at the forefront of cow protection movement in the country.
Dalit activists have said the unrest reflects deep frustration after years of discrimination by those from higher castes.
“Don’t attack any Dalits. If you want to shoot, shoot me, but don’t shoot my Dalit brothers”, said the Prime Minister, while addressing a Bharatiya Janata Party’s “Karyakarta Maha Sammelanam” here.
“Attack me, but not them. Don’t harm them. This game must end”.
The comments come the day after the premier also broke his silence on the self-styled cow defenders, saying any vigilantes should be prosecuted.
“We also request the state governments to take strict action against such elements and not let the good work of “gau raksha and gau sewa” get hampered”, the statement said.
Manu Bhai, a native of Gujarat, was passing through Sultanpur town in the Raisen district of the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh, with his 25-year-old cleaner, Mohsin Khan, on Thursday night (4 August) when his wheat-laden truck accidentally ran over three cows. “BJP’s attitude on the issue of cow is well known”.
Digvijay Singh has heaped scorn over PM Modi for strong words against cow vigilantes.
