Donald Cerrone plans to move back to lightweight after UFC 202

Rick Story plans to halt Donald Cerrone’s rise up the welterweight ranks at UFC 202, and then afterwards, perhaps crack a beer or two with his opponent… While the win most likely won’t get him a title shot, the road to a title shot would be short. “That’s the one I really want”. “People can’t grasp that”. “[Fighting at] 170 is just something I’m doing in the meantime”.

Still, Cerrone tells FOX Sports that after he takes out Rick Story at UFC 202 this weekend (Sat., Aug. 20, 2016) in Las Vegas, Nevada, he intends to call out Alvarez for a championship fight at UFC 205 this November in New York City.

Cerrone actually welcomed Alvarez to the UFC in 2014 during his debut with the promotion and handed the current lightweight champion a unanimous decision loss.

Cerrone wants the matchup with Alvarez on the promotion’s first ever card in NY and is one of the rare occasions that “Cowboy” has outlined his forthcoming career plans. It’s going to be a fight, and (the criticism) doesn’t bother me because it’s not going to change anything I do.

“After I beat Story, I’m going to go back down [in] weight, 155, and have a little meeting with Eddie Alvarez”.

“Hell yeah, Madison Square Garden, how cool would that be to fight in?”

Cerrone is notoriously a laid back character and has often spent fight week days flying in planes or in the lake, or another activity that will have his bosses anxious about his preparation.

Cerrone certainly had trouble dealing with the pressure that Rafael dos Anjos brought, but RDA is only man to defeat him since 2013.

“For sure. I know Khabib’s trying to rally and say he deserves a title shot, but he doesn’t”, Cerrone said. “Don’t get hurt for two years and then start talking”.

It’s not out of the realm of possibility that with a win Saturday night, Cerrone’s name could be in the conversation for a title shot. Cerrone prefers to think about the matchups that would appease the fans and allow him to have the most fun inside the Octagon.

Alvarez, meanwhile, has publicly stated that he’d like to face the victor of UFC 202’s main event between Diaz and McGregor.
